Varied uses of the adhesives with their varied chemical reactions

Epoxy adhesives, sealants, coatings, potting compounds and impregnation resins are the varied uses of the adhesives. Temperature happens to be an important consideration in case of preparing the adhesives. The systems involved in making it, involves two part systems. One is when it is cured in the room temperature and the other one is when it is cured at the elevated temperature. The elevated temperature refers to the temperature ranging between 250 and 300 degree Fahrenheit.

Epoxy is the cured end product of the epoxy resins. Epoxy is put into reactions using catalytic homo polymerization. It also uses wide ranges of co- reactants like acids, phenols, alcohols and thiols. When the reaction of polyepoxides takes place with themselves or with polyfunctional hardeners, it forms a thermosetting polymer with high mechanical properties, temperature and chemical resistance.

It has varied ranges of use. It is used in metal coatings, fiber-reinforced plastic materials. Epoxy resin is even used by the dentists to bind the gutta percha in some root canal treatment procedure as well.

The prosthetics that are used in the dental surgery are also the product of epoxy adhesives. Thus it is not just a glue but an important part of your life.

Epoxy adhesives are a type of adhesives called the “structural “or engineering adhesives. It constitutes of acrylic, cyanoacrylate and other forms of chemical compositions. It has records of high performances in case of its durability and resistance. Thus its uses are regular in aircraft, automobiles, bicycles, boats, golf clubs skies, snowboards and other such applications which require high strength in the application.

It does not limit the work of the epoxy adhesive manufacturers because the adhesives are used for wood, metal, glass, stone and some plastics as well. Their qualities might vary and they can be opaque, colored, transparent, rigid or even flexible. It might be fast settling or slow settling as well. The epoxy adhesives are more resistant when they cured with heat and when they undergo chemical reactions.  It is noteworthy that though heat is good in case of making the adhesive but the quality degrades above 350 degree Fahrenheit.

There are other means to cure the epoxies also. It can even be cured by the exposure to the ultraviolet light. They are used mostly in fiber optics and optoelectronics.

The epoxy manufacturers also function as formulators. In this regard it must be said that the formulator companies purchase raw epoxy resins also. They further blend, customize or modify the epoxy systems. It all forms out of the raw resin epoxy adhesives. These formulators make over 60 percent of the dollar value of the epoxy market.

There are over hundreds of ways to modify the epoxies. The formulators either add fillers or flexibilizers. The other means are to use the viscosity reducers, colorants, thickeners, accelerators, adhesion promoters, etc.

The varied manufacturing types reduce the cost, improve its performance and improve its processing conveniently. So a formulator finds over thousands of formulations according to the requirement in the market.
