Iran’s economy thrives because of the carpet weaving industry. The country is famous for the hand woven carpets however these days, the machine made carpets are also one of the booming industries in Iran. Apart from carpets being a money making industry, it is also a form of art that is famous on its own right all over the world. Nearly 30% of the carpet industry is occupied by the hand woven carpets. Approximately 1.5 million people are directly or indirectly linked with this industry and earn their bread and butter from it.
At the present times though, the hand woven carpets are facing a threat from its machine made varieties all over the world. Iran is also the largest exporter of carpets in the world. The National City carpets that are handmade are designed with intricate designs and patterns that are influenced by the Persian designs. These are of course much more expensive than the machine made varieties.
The hand woven carpets are considered as artistic masterpieces and each of them take a lot of time to get made. Each of them is uniquely designed and you would never find any two carpets designed in the same manner. In fact the weavers who create and weave these designer carpets themselves are rarely recognized for their efforts although each carpet is sold at handsome prices.
According to the national Iranian carpet center, the carpet exports in Iran are highest in terms of the non oil exports. All the carpets are usually made from wool and some other materials like cotton and silk are also used. These cotton and silk carpets are used for the workshop and city foundation purpose.
